Structure of the degrees

All Master’s degrees have a NQF rating at Level 9 and are made up of a total of 200 credits.

Master of Philosophy in Theology – students choose from one of the two specialisations:

Please Note: Not all elective subjects are offered every year.

Specialisation in Fundamental and Systematic Theology (MPTSFST)  

(i)      A candidate who does not hold an undergraduate or proper qualification in theology, is required to complete the module, General survey of theology (MPHT538), the four core modules named below and two of the elective modules from the list below.

(ii)     A candidate, other than a candidate who falls under (i) above, must complete the following four modules:

Core modules MPHP501 Dignity of the human person
  MPHT537 New testament studies
  MPHT543 Trinity
  MPHT541 Christology
Elective modules A candidate mentioned under (ii) above must complete three of the following modules:
  MPHT544 African theology
  MPHT505 Church history
  MPHT542 Church and Sacraments
  MPHT540 Ecumenism and Inter-faith dialogue
  MPHT539 Moral theology
  MPHT511 Old Testament studies
  MPHP508 Philosophy of religion
  MPHT545 Science and religion


Specialisation in Christian Spirituality  (MPTSCS)

Core modules A candidate must complete the following six modules:
  MPHT530 Biblical spirituality
  MPHT531 Christian spiritual tradition
  MPHP501 Dignity of the human person
  MPHT532 Dynamics of spirituality
  MPHT538 General survey of theology
  MPHT533 Mysticism
A candidate who holds an undergraduate or prior qualification in theology, which Senate considers to be acceptable, will not be required to complete “General survey of theology” (MPHT538) but must replace it with an elective.
Elective modules A candidate must complete one of the following modules:
  MPHT535 African spirituality
  MPHT534 Spiritual accompaniment
  MPHT524 Spirituality and psychology
